‘Her Dad Comes Out With a Dang Shotgun!’ John Oliver’s Last Week Tonight Compiles Montage of Wild Quotes from Phillies Commentator John Kruk
John Oliver ended a recent episode of Last Week Tonight with a montage of utterly bizarre quotes from Philadelphia Phillies commentator John Kruk.
Kruk, who played for the Phillies, has become beloved in the broadcast booth for his habit of going on wild tangents and telling unbelievable stories from his playing days. Last Week Tonight decided to honor Kruk by compiling various clips of him doing exactly that.
First, there was the time Kruk wondered why children aren’t born with hair on their chest.
KRUK: You know, I was thinking about this today, now that we have some time: why aren’t we born with hair on our chest as men? Why does it wait until like you’re 16, 17, 18, 20 — whatever — and then it starts growing? What, are those follicles dormant?
Then, there was the time a girl’s father explicably tried to shoot at him and a friend.
KRUK: So, Kenny Pearce decided, ‘Hey,I’d like to get my girlfriend to come up here.’ So we go down there and pick her up, [and] her dad comes out with a dang shotgun, trying to shoot at us.
The producers also made sure to include a story that’s become an instant classic among all of Kruk’s musings: the prison baseball game.
KRUK: I ever tell you about playing the prison team when I was playing winter ball? … So I asked the catcher, ‘What did he do?’ He said, ‘Oh, he found his girlfriend cheating and he burned up her car with her and her boyfriend in it… Very uncomfortable at-bat.
