Hot Mic Catches Boston Red Sox Outfielder Jarren Duran Calling Fan Gay Slur in the Middle of At-Bat

A microphone at Fenway Park caught Boston Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran yelling a gay slur at a fan in the middle of his at-bat.

In the sixth inning of Sunday’s game against the Houston Astros, Duran was in the batter’s box with two men on base while his team trailed 10-0. Several pitches into the at-bat, he stepped out of the box to readjust his gloves. During that time, a fan could be heard yelling, “You need a tennis racket!” The comment was likely a reference to Duran being unable to hit the ball as he was 0 for 2 at the time.

Duran took exception to the comment and responded with, “Shut up, you fucking f*****.” The slur could be heard just as clearly as the fan who yelled at him.

Shortly after the clip went viral online, Duran apologized.

“During tonight’s game, I used a truly horrific word when responding to a fan,” he said in a statement. “I feel awful knowing how many people I offended and disappointed. I apologize to the entire Red Sox organization, but more importantly to the entire LGBTQ community. Our young fans are supposed to be able to look up to me as a role model, but tonight I fell far short of that responsibility. I will use this opportunity to educate myself and my teammates and to grow as a person.”

Around the same time, the Red Sox issued a statement of their own saying the team had already “addressed” the incident with Duran.

“We echo Jarren’s apology to our fans, especially to the LGBTQ community,” the team said. “We strive to be an organization that welcomes all fans to Fenway Park, and we will continue to educate our employees, players, coaches and staff on the importance of inclusivity.”
