CNN Guest Makes On Air Apology Over ‘Joke’ About RFK Jr.’s Voice: ‘Totally Out of Bounds’
Republican strategist Doug Heye offered an apology on Tuesday over a “joke” he previously made on CNN about Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s voice.
Heye joined Jim Acosta for a separate discussion, but began by calling his previous comment “totally out of bounds.”
“Let me say first since you talked about RFK, last week I was on this network and I made a joke about the way he speaks, which is totally out of bounds and just wanted to acknowledge that and apologize for it,” Heye said. “His ideas? Totally in bounds.
While discussing Kennedy’s endorsement of former President Donald Trump, Heye said, “One, you can’t understand what he says. Two, if you can, you can’t understand what he says.”
Heye called Kennedy’s announcement “cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs.”
“This was cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs, and trying to get any logic out of that is… good luck with that!” he said.
According to a Kennedy campaign video, Kennedy’s hoarse and raspy voice is due to a neurological disorder called spasmodic dysphonia. Kennedy said he was struck with the injury, which can affect voice and speech, when he was 42 years old.
“I feel sorry for the people who have to listen to me,” he told the Los Angeles Times. “My voice doesn’t really get tired. It just sounds terrible. But the injury is neurological, so actually the more I use the voice the stronger it tends to get.”
