President Joe Biden has announced his withdrawal from the 2024 presidential race. The president made the announcement on social media Sunday afternoon.
“While it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and my country for me to stand down and focus solely on fulfilling my duties as president for the remainder of my term,” Biden wrote.

The announcement follows calls from more than 35 Democratic members of Congress for the president to step aside. Pressure on the president had increased from Demcocratic lawmakers and left-leaning commentators on cable news since the debate against former President Donald Trump in late June.
In the statement, Biden did not endorse Vice President Kamala Harris or anyone else to replace him atop the 2024 presidential ticket — though he did offer a brief note of appreciation to his second-in-command.
“I want to thank Vice President Kamala Harris for being an extraordinary partner in all this work,” Biden wrote.
