Hamas political bureau chief and former Palestinian Authority Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh was assassinated in Iran on Tuesday.
Hamas announced in a statement that Haniyeh had been assassinated while attending the inauguration of new Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian in Iran’s capital Tehran.
In a statement, Hamas claimed Haniyeh “died as a result of a treacherous Zionist raid on his residence in Tehran.”
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas also condemned the assassination in his own statement, calling it “a cowardly act and a serious escalation.”
Haniyey had been photographed with Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei just one day before he was killed.
