Trump Muses About Staying In Power For More Than Two Terms

Former President Donald Trump mused during a speech before the National Rifle Association over the weekend about staying in office for three terms, despite the U.S. Constitution banning him from doing so.

During an odd moment from Trump’s lengthy speech, he praised President Franklin D. Roosevelt – who is often considered anathema to conservatives. “Never seen anything like it, very much reminiscent of the days of FDR,” Trump said of his own record, adding:

You know, FDR was a beautiful, had a beautiful patrician voice, magnificent voice, great debater, very smart man. You know, FDR, 16 years, almost 16 years. He was four-term, I don’t know. Are we going to be considered three-term or two-term? You tell me, Ronnie, what do you think, are we three-term or two-term, if we win. But think of it. They’re going to say wonderful.

Trump then repeated his baseless claim that President Joe Biden is taking some kind of drug in order to give high-energy speeches, “Now he did that State of the Union the other day. He was high as a kite. So I think we should call for drug tests on the debate.”

Politico’s Myah Ward noted of Trump’s remark that has repeatedly suggested he would not leave the White House after a second term.

“It’s not the first time Trump has mentioned extending his stay in the White House, an idea he suggested while on the campaign trail in 2020. His latest remarks provide more fodder for the Biden campaign, which seized on the comments as it tries to paint Trump as a threat to democracy and institutional norms,” Ward reported.

She added that Trump also recently told Time Magazine that he does not support changing to the Constitution to retain power, “I wouldn’t be in favor of it at all. I intend to serve four years and do a great job. And I want to bring our country back. I want to put it back on the right track. Our country is going down. We’re a failing nation right now. We’re a nation in turmoil.”
