‘Huge Warning Sign’: DeSantis Sounds Alarm on Trump Campaign Days After Bending Knee to Him

Even though Ron DeSantis just got done falling in line behind Donald Trump, the Florida governor warned that the former president has a limited pool of voters he can resonate with, and he’ll have to take care to make sure his support base doesn’t erode.

The former Republican presidential candidate spoke with conservative podcaster Steve Deace on Tuesday, with Politico noting this was his first interview since suspending his campaign and endorsing Trump. In the interview, DeSantis reiterated his concerns about Trump’s electability as he warned about non-MAGA factions of the Republican Party who might’ve voted for him once, but won’t do it again.

Per Politico:

“When I have people come up to me who voted for Reagan in ’76 and have been conservative their whole life say that they don’t want to vote for Trump again, that’s a problem,” DeSantis said. “So he’s got to figure out a way to solve that. I think there’s an enthusiasm problem overall, and then I also just think there are some voters that have checked out at this point that you got to find a way to get them back.”

DeSantis called the trend a “huge warning sign for Republicans” and predicted New Hampshire’s primary today would not have the record turnout that’s been predicted — except among “more liberal voters.”

In the days before he pulled out of the race, DeSantis criticized the media between those who went easy on Trump and those who are treating him like he’s already the Republican nominee. DeSantis returned to these criticisms as he accused the media of amplifying Trump and attributing his Iowa caucus washout to coverage that convinced Hawkeye State voters that voting for him would be pointless.

“I think that was part of the reason why the turnout was low, because people had been told it’s a fait accompli, Trump’s up so much in the polls, he’s got the nomination,” said DeSantis. “And I think they’re just like, ‘You know what, we’re doing this again,’ and they’re checked out.”
