‘The Weirdest Person on the Planet!’ Stephen Colbert Rips RFK Jr. for Bizarre Central Park Bear Story

Stephen Colbert called Robert F. Kennedy Jr. “the weirdest person on the planet” in response to the bizarre incident involving him and a dead bear cub.

On Aug. 4, Kennedy posted a video on social media of himself — joined by Roseanne Barradmitting to leaving the dead cub in Central Park in 2014. He claimed he put the cub in his car after a woman struck and killed it with her van, then decided to take it to Central Park and stage the scene as if the cub was run over by a cyclist. He even left one of his own bikes at the scene. He also claimed in the videos he was considering skinning the cub and putting the meat in his refrigerator.

The video was apparently an effort to get ahead of a story that would soon be published by The New Yorker.

On Tuesday, Colbert talked about the recent reports that Kennedy — who’s running as an independent in the presidential election — has been disqualified from New York ballots for falsely claiming the state as his place of residence. Kennedy has lived in California since 2014.

“Foiled again!” Colbert said on The Late Show. “And he would’ve gotten away with it, too, if he wasn’t the weirdest person on the planet! RFK Jr. claims this is a just a misunderstanding, because ‘he has considered New York his home since childhood and intended to return.’ That doesn’t make it better! That’s like a surgeon saying, ‘You’re in good hands, Mr. Johnson. I intended to finish medical school. Now, let’s get stabbing!'”

Colbert then pivoted to the Central Park story, claiming Kennedy making headlines again was an excuse to bring up the now 10-day-old story.

“Now this may shock you folks, but apparently there are downsides to ‘living la vida roadkill,'” Colbert said, “because, according to the CDC, bear meat can be infected with brain worms.”
