‘They Make Things Up’: Pelosi Says Republicans Criticizing Walz Over Military Service Is A ‘Sign Of Bankruptcy’ Of Their Ideas

Former Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) went after Republicans criticizing Tim Walz over his claims regarding his military service by accusing them of dishonesty. “They make things up,” she said.

Walz served in the Army National Guard for 24 years but left in 2005 to launch his political career. Before leaving, he was deployed to Italy to assist with the U.S. war effort in Afghanistan but never deployed to combat.

He has faced criticism after a 2018 video showed him claiming he carried weapons “in war” among other past statements, and for allegedly misrepresenting his rank.

During a Sunday interview with Jen Psaki, Pelosi responded to the controversy by claiming it is actually Walz’s GOP critics who are being dishonest, and arguing that the attacks on Walz are a “sign of bankruptcy” of Republican ideas.

PSAKI: He was he served for 24 years in the National Guard. He was the highest enlisted member of Congress. I had been the highest ranking enlisted member of Congress when he was in Congress, and did an enormous amount on the Veterans Affairs Committee. What do you say to these efforts to to attack his military record?

PELOSI: Well, first of all, it’s a sign of the bankruptcy of their ideas. They have anything to say so they make up things. So first of all, he was in the National Guard 20 years. But then 9/11 happened. So he signed up for four more years. He retired from that to run for Congress months before his unit was assigned to being deployed. So it was after he left. So they’re just trying to confuse things. But he came to Congress and was respected by our colleagues, elected to be the top Democrat on the Veterans Affairs Committee, where he and working with Chad Edwards on the Appropriations Committee and he on the authorizing committee made historic advances for veterans meeting their needs more than had been done since the GI Bill during World War two.
