Maddow Mocks ‘Sad’ Republicans at Trump’s Trial for Dressing Like Him: ‘They Were All Wearing the Exact Same Outfit!’
Rachel Maddow roasted Republican politicians who attended Donald Trump’s criminal trial in New York on Tuesday, observing that they donned classic Trumpian red ties.
MSNBC aired a clip of Trump praising his “surrogates” who have been “speaking very beautifully” against his prosecutions. The former president has pleaded not guilty to 34 felony counts of falsifying business records.
Chris Hayes noted that Trump is under a gag order that prevents him from attacking witnesses, jurors, and family members of court staff. He then played a clip of Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum, Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL), and former GOP presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy railing against Trump’s prosecutions and attacking the judge and witnesses. Their treks to New York came on the heels of visits by Sens. J.D. Vance (R-OH), Tommy Tuberville (R-AL), and Rick Scott (R-FL) on previous court days.
“He couldn’t say those things himself, a lot of them,” Hayes said. “But they say for him.”
Maddow followed up by pointing to the sartorial choices of Trump’s allies at the trial:
Television is a visual medium. It is not my area of expertise, but I feel like I can do a little bit of analysis here, which is that one thing that has changed in the Republican Party is that their being in the tank for Donald Trump over the last five years has changed and become so much more tanked that they all now dress like him, too. They were all wearing the exact same outfit! It was like they were Rockettes…
Because Mike Johnson is the speaker, he gets a stripe [on his tie], but all the rest of them, it’s the exact same thing and they’re dressed up just like him to praise him. They all use the same language. They all describe him as their friend. I don’t know if Donald Trump has friends. I don’t think that Vivek Ramaswamy is one of them, if he does have friends. And this is a display of sycophancy and a job interview…
