Lawrence O’Donnell Marvels at Trump’s Latest Legal Misstep: ‘I Have Never Seen a Stupider Litigant’
MSNBC’s Lawrence O’Donnell and Andrew Weissmann marveled at the “stupidity” of Donald Trump after the former president claimed he has nearly $500 million in cash while he is simultaneously telling a court he cannot pay nearly $500 million.
Trump is attempting to appeal a $454 million civil fraud judgment, but his lawyers told a New York appellate court this week that they have been unable to find an institution willing to underwrite a bond for that amount. If he does not post the bond by Monday’s deadline, the New York attorney general may begin seizing his assets.
In a post on Truth Social on Friday morning, Trump claimed he has “ALMOST FIVE HUNDRED MILLION DOLLARS IN CASH, A SUBSTANTIAL AMOUNT OF WHICH I INTENDED TO USE IN MY CAMPAIGN FOR PRESIDENT.”
Appearing on Friday’s edition of The Last Word, former federal prosecutor Andrew Weissmann explained why the post could be problematic for Trump.
“I would also just point out the stupidity of Donald Trump saying today that he actually has the money,” Weissmann said. “He has pending before the court an application where the application to the court is, ‘Please lower the bond amount because I cannot pay it.’ And at the same time, he has said, ‘I can pay it.’ So, just put yourself in the shoes of the judges who have that application before them. Do you think they would grant that based on the defendant now saying, ‘Oh, I can actually pay it’? I mean, one way or the other, somebody is lying about that.”
O’Donnell held nothing back in his reply.
“Yeah, I’ve never seen a stupider litigant in court on a very consistent basis.”
Weissmann’s view was echoed earlier in the day on CNN by legal analyst Nick Akerman, who called it “the dumbest thing [Trump] could have possibly done.”
