Attorneys for Donald Trump sent a cease and desist letter to the producers behind an upcoming biopic in an effort to block the release of the movie.
The movie, titled The Apprentice, stars Sebastian Stan as a young Trump and Jeremy Strong as Roy Cohn. It recently premiered at the Cannes Film Festival where it was given an eight minute standing ovation. The Apprentice reportedly contains an unflattering portrait of the former president, including a scene where he rapes his ex-wife Ivana.
Variety’s Brent Lang and Katcy Stephan first reported on Friday that a letter was sent to the producers, cautioning them against distributing the movie, citing two people familiar with the letter. The Apprentice does not have a U.S. distributor yet, but it’s been picked up by some foreign markets.
The producers behind the movie released a statement calling their work “fair and balanced.”
“The film is a fair and balanced portrait of the former president,” they wrote. “We want everyone to see it and then decide.”
Dan Snyder, the former owner of the Washington Commanders NFL team — and a Trump supporter — is reportedly upset with the movie he financed.
Trump’s team referred to the movie as “malicious defamation” and said it should be thrown into a “dumpster fire.”
“This ‘film’ is pure malicious defamation, should not see the light of day, and doesn’t even deserve a place in the straight-to-DVD section of a bargain bin at a soon-to-be-closed discount movie store, it belongs in a dumpster fire,” Steven Cheung, Trump campaign communications director, said.
