‘This Is So Irresponsible’: Former Marlins President Slams Oklahoma State Coach for ‘Disgraceful’ Response to Player’s DUI Arrest
Former Miami Marlins president David Samson called Oklahoma State football coach Mike Gundy “irresponsible” for his comments on his player’s recent DUI arrest.
Gundy was on ESPN on Monday during Big 12 Media Day when he talked about the arrest of running back Ollie Gordon. While discussing the team’s decision not to suspend him for the incident, Gundy claimed he drank a similar amount “a thousand times” before getting behind the wheel. He made the comment in an effort to make a point about everyone being guilty of similar mistakes.
Shortly after Gundy said that on air, Samson claimed he would have fired him.
I would fire him and it wouldn’t even make my top 5. Disgraceful. https://t.co/hvOTQY90oa

The next day, Samson went off on Gundy on The Dan Le Batard Show.
“This is so irresponsible that you cannot and should not be able to come back from that by claiming you were talking about something else,” Samson said, “which is what everyone does when they’re caught. ‘No, no, you misunderstood me,’ or, ‘No, no, I’m a sex addict,’ or, ‘No, no, I need rehab for whatever when I get caught.’ This is him making it OK.”
Those comments, Samson continued, were especially bad considering the recent death of Minnesota Vikings rookie Khyree Jackson. Jackson was killed in an accident Saturday morning that also took the lives of two other players. The three were all teammates in high school.
Police believed the driver that hit their car was under the influence of alcohol.
“He is making the behavior OK, and it’s just not OK,” Samson said. “Talk to Khyree Jackson’s family. It’s just not OK.”
