Oklahoma State’s Mike Gundy Casually Admits to Driving Drunk ‘A Thousand Times’ While Talking About Player’s DUI Arrest
Oklahoma State football coach Mike Gundy may have admitted to his own extensive history of drunk driving while talking about a player’s recent DUI arrest.
On July 2, running back Ollie Gordon was arrested for driving under the influence. Oklahoma Highway Patrol observed the 20-year-old swerving into the adjacent lane while traveling 82 miles per hour in a 65 mph zone. After stopping him, troopers detected the smell of alcohol.
Although Gordon admitted to having open bottles of vodka and tequila, he refused a sobriety test. He was then taken to the Cleveland County Jail where he registered blood alcohol levels of 0.11 and 0.10 — 0.03 and 0.02 over the legal limit in Oklahoma, respectively.
On Tuesday, Gundy talked about Gordon’s arrest and the program’s decision not to suspend him for it.
“So I looked it up on my phone, ‘What would be the legal limit?’ In Oklahoma, it’s .08; and Ollie was .1,” Gundy said on ESPN. “So I looked it up and it was based on body weight. Not to get into the legal side of it, but I thought, really, two or three beers, or four. I’m not justifying what Ollie did. I’m telling you what decision I made. Well, I thought, ‘I’ve probably done that a thousand times in my life,’ and it was just fine. So I got lucky. People get lucky.
“Ollie made a decision that he wished he could’ve done better. When I talked to Ollie, I said, ‘You’re lucky you got out light because you make a lot of money to play football,’ because back in the day, being able to cover the cost of what he’s gonna go through would be difficult for a college player. It’s not for him.”
Gundy then continued to emphasize that Gordon was “lucky” that no one was hurt.
In response to the backlash for his comments, Gundy took to social media to clarify that the point he attempted to make was that everyone makes mistakes.
“My intended point today at Big 12 media days was that we are all guilty of making bad decisions,” Gundy said. “It was not a reference to something specific.”
