‘Help Me, Jesus! Help Me!’ Distraught Alabama Fan Mourns the Retirement of Legendary Coach Nick Saban on ESPN Radio

An ESPN Radio caller on Thursday was an emotional wreck as he was still trying to come to terms with the retirement of Alabama football coach Nick Saban.

Saban announced his retirement Wednesday after 17 seasons with the Alabama Crimson Tide. He won six national championships there, and a seventh with Louisiana State University in 2003, cementing himself as arguably the greatest college football coaches ever and one of the greatest coaches in the history of American football.

On Thursday’s episode of The Paul Finebaum Show, a popular Alabama fan simply known as “Legend” called in to grieve. He was not taking Saban’s retirement well.

“Man, Paul, it’s a sad, sad day of loss, brother,” Legend told the ESPN analyst. “I ain’t felt this bad since I lost my mama, man. This is horrible! I’m in freaking shock! What is going on? The whole operation is falling apart, Paul! The whole operation, baby! Help me! Help me, Jesus! Help me! Oh my god, Paul. Give me a word of wisdom, brother! Give me a word of wisdom!”

Finebaum, however, wasn’t interested in comforting the devastated fan.

“You know me, Legend. I shoot straight,” Finebaum responded. “Dark days are ahead.”

The response prompted laughter from both. Legend reiterated how “horrible” it was to lose Saban, then thanked him for all the success he brought to the school.

“Man, I’d just like to say to Coach Saban and Miss Terry [Saban], we love y’all, we appreciate you,” Legend continued. “Coach Saban, we was in the pit of Hell. We was in the pit, baby! The devil was torching us! And you came along and lifted us out of the pit of Hell and raised us back to the mountaintop, baby. You are the greatest to ever do it. You are a legend. You are a GOAT.

“And let me say this to you, brother: change your mind! Come back! Come back!”
