If it were up to the Alabama Democratic Party, legendary football coach Nick Saban would be next in line to take on Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) for his seat in the U.S. Senate.

Saban, who won six national championships with the Alabama Crimson Tide, announced his retirement days after his team was eliminated from the College Football Playoff. The move was part of a whirlwind of coaching changes in the sport, with New England Patriots legend Bill Belichick also stepping down.

Now, there are growing calls for the former Alabama coach to enter the political realm. On Wednesday night, Josh Moon — a writer for the Alabama Political Reporter — suggested that Saban should make the switch to politics.

“Nick Saban for US Senate,” he tweeted. “Save us from Tommy Tuberville one more time.”

At the time, it seemed like a joke. Six minutes later, however, the Alabama Democratic Party responded and endorsed the idea.

That, too, could also just be a joke; but that didn’t stop people from speculating. Multiple outlets, including The Hill, Deseret News, and PennLive, have reported on the Twitter exchange.

As those outlets have mentioned, Saban has stayed away from politics for the majority of his career. One of the few exceptions was his endorsement of Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV), with whom he grew up in West Virginia. In January 2022, Saban also signed a letter to Manchin urging him to support the passage of the Freedom to Vote Act.
