Newly Released Body Camera Footage Shows Law Enforcement on Roof Next to Trump Shooter’s Dead Body
Body camera footage released on Tuesday shows a Secret Service agent and police officers on the roof of the building where Thomas Matthew Crooks tried to kill former President Donald Trump at a rally.
Crooks, 20, was a registered Republican who made a one-time donation of $15 on a Democratic fundraising website. On July 13, he shot Trump in the ear at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. He also killed one rally-goer and wounded two others. Secret Service snipers killed Crooks soon after he began shooting.
The Secret Service has faced intense bipartisan scrutiny over the security failure. After being grilled in a congressional hearing on Monday, Director Kim Cheatle announced her resignation the next day.
Hours later, Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) released body camera footage his office obtained from Beaver County Emergency Services. His social media post contained a “sensitive content” warning, as Crooks’ body is blurred out, except for his legs. There is blood emanating from his corpse.
The video is just over three minutes long and shows a Secret Service agent speaking with local law enforcement attempting to ascertain the threat in the immediate aftermath of the shooting.
Upon being shot on stage, Trump was swarmed by Secret Service agents. Before being ushered into a vehicle, the former president – with blood on his face– raised a fist to the crowd and said, “Fight.” Days later, he appeared at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee where he accepted his party’s nomination for president. He told the crowd he would only tell his story about the shooting once because it is “too painful.”
