The delay to former President Donald Trump’s appearance at the National Association of Black Journalists was reportedly due to his fury that the event would have live fact checkers.
Trump and the moderators, which included ABC News reporter Rachel Scott, Semafor political reporter Kadia Goba, and Fox News anchor Harris Faulkner, did not come out to the stage until nearly an hour after the event was scheduled.
The former president and his campaign claimed audio issues stopped the event from starting at the scheduled time. During the discussion, Trump also complained that he was having trouble hearing the questions from the moderators due to audio issues.
However, a report from The New York Times indicates that the delay was due to Trump’s anger that there would be live fact-checkers examining his answers to questions.
The NABJ board reportedly refused to accommodate Trump’s demand to stop NABJ staffers from fact checking the discussion.
Per the Times:
About 45 minutes before Trump took the stage, the former president pushed back on NABJ staffers who wanted to live fact check the event, according to a person familiar with the planning. The board pushed back against the last minute demand. When Trump took the stage, he said the delay was due to NABJ’s audio issues.
PolitiFact also conducted a live fact check during the NABJ conference.
