Vivek Ramaswamy told Patrick Bet-David that a lot more voters than he expected agree with conservative commentator Ann Coulter’s declaration to his face that she could never have voted for him because of his Indian heritage.
Ramaswamy joined Patrick Bet-David this week on The Patrick Bet-David Podcast and offered some more thoughts on Coulter’s words, saying he believes such beliefs are “widespread” in the United States, but far from a majority.
Ramaswamy said he relaunched his Truth podcast recently and he wanted to bring on people who had disagreed or attacked him during his presidential campaign. The entrepreneur said he expected some “tension” in bringing on guests like Coulter.
“During the campaign, I don’t remember exactly what she said, but on numerous instances [she] would comment on different ways in which I might not be qualified to be president,” he said. “So, let’s get it on and have a conversation. And both of us are interested in the them of nationalism. I did not expect she would just kick it off right there and get right into the business, and I think it actually made for a really good conversation.”
Ramaswamy praised Coulter for her honesty, but added, “Of course I disagree like hell with her on that being a criteria to be the U.S. president.”
Ramaswamy was born in Ohio and his parents were legal immigrants. He said he believes Coulter wants more “security” in a president to come from the fact that they have multiple generations going back in the U.S.
Bet-David asked Ramaswamy out of Republican primary “voting bloc,” what “percentage” he believes agrees with Coulter.
“I will tell you this with confidence, it is a lot higher than I believed it was a year ago. It’s a lot higher than I believe you would believe it is too,” he said.
Ramaswamy praised Coulter for having the “spine” to express a belief he believes is “widespread.”
“I respect her for saying it even though I disagree because at least she has the spine to say in public what many other people, not a majority, not even close to a majority, but a lot of people,” he said. “She is not alone. She is voicing a view that I think is widespread.”
On Ramaswamy’s podcast, Coulter told him she could have never voted for him right after he introduced her.
“I agreed with many, many things you said during– in fact, probably more than most other candidates when you were running for president, but I still would not have voted for you because you’re an Indian. We’ll get back to that,” she said.
She further explained, “We’ve never had a president who didn’t have at least partial English ancestry. Never. We’ve only had one Catholic president [sic]. There was only one Catholic signatory to the Declaration of Independence. They were all not only protestants, but pretty much Presbyterian.”
