Steve Bannon lashed out at conservative media magnate Rupert Murdoch as a “bigger enemy” to former President Donald Trump than MSNBC in an interview just ahead of him having to surrender for his prison sentence.

Bannon spoke with David Brooks for The New York Times in a chat last week that was published on Monday, the day Bannon surrendered for a four month prison sentence in Connecticut. He was convicted of defying subpeonas from the congressional subcommittee that investigated the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.

Bannon took his shot at Murdoch, whose family is behind Fox News and a number of other media outlets, when Brooks asked him if he considered himself part of the media with his War Room podcast. He’s also the former executive chairman of Breitbart.

Bannon referred to his show as a “military headquarters for a populist revolt.”

“I’m not a journalist. I’m not in the media. This is a military headquarters for a populist revolt. This is how we motivate people. This show is an activist show. If you watch this show, you’re a foot soldier. We call it the Army of the Awakened,” he said.

He then claimed Murdoch is a “bigger enemy” to Trump than MSNBC, a network stacked with vocal critics of the former president.

“Murdoch is a bigger enemy of ours than MSNBC. Because he’s the epitome of neoliberal neocon,” Bannon declared. “And they’re the opiate of the masses. They’re the controlled opposition, right? They’re never going to want fundamental change. They’ll throw some shiny toys — [Barack] Obama’s a Muslim, the kind of issues which we mock all the time.”

Bannon claimed his prison sentence will only help his show and Trump’s election chances.

“I’m kind of honored, in one way, that they hate me so much they feel they have to put Bannon away. Their thing is that, if we put Bannon in prison or get him away from his microphone, that’ll help us win,” he said. “It will be the exact opposite.”
