Vice President Kamala Harris told CNN anchor Dana Bash she would be open to appointing a Republican to her cabinet to create a “diversity of opinion” in her administration on Thursday.

During CNN’s interview with Harris – the vice president’s first since she announced her campaign for the presidency in July – Bash asked, “You had a lot of Republican speakers at the convention. Will you appoint a Republican to your cabinet?”

“Yes, I would,” replied Harris.

After Bash asked if she had anyone in mind, Harris said:

No one in particular in mind. We’ve got 68 days to go til this election, so I’m not putting the cart before the horse, but I would. I think– I think it’s really important. I have spent my career inviting diversity of opinion. I think it’s important to have people at the table when some of the most important decisions are being made that have different views, different experiences, and I think it would be to the benefit of the American public to have a member of my cabinet who was a Republican.

Bash noted following the interview that it was not unheard of for a Democratic president to appoint a Republican to their cabinet.

Former President Barack Obama chose former Rep. Ray LaHood (R-IL) to serve as his secretary of transportation in 2009.

A number of Republicans spoke in support of Harris at the

Democratic National Convention in Chicago this month, including former Trump White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham, former Mike Pence advisor Olivia Troye, and former Georgia lieutenant governor Geoff Duncan.
