Hollywood legend Donald Sutherland has died at the age of 88.
His death was announced by his son, actor Kiefer Sutherland, on Twitter/X on Thursday:
With a heavy heart, I tell you that my father, Donald Sutherland, has passed away. I personally think one of the most important actors in the history of film. Never daunted by a role, good, bad or ugly. He loved what he did and did what he loved, and one can never ask for more… pic.twitter.com/3EdJB03KKT

Variety reported that he died on Thursday in Miami following a long illness. Sutherland’s storied career spanned decades and began in low-budget horror movies including Castle of the Living Dead. But after he progressed to roles M.A.S.H., The Dirty Dozen, Don’t Look Now, and Klute, he cemented his status as a counterculture icon.
As an actor, he displayed a massive range in movies like Ordinary People, Without Limits, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, JFK, Animal House, and the Hunger Games trilogy. He also worked in television playing J. Paul Getty in FX’s Trust and winning an Emmy for his work on HBO’s Citizen X.
Sutherland was also an anti-war activist during the Vietnam War and founded FTA (Free the Army, also known as Fuck the Army) with fellow actors Jane Fonda, Peter Boyle, and Howard Hesseman. FTA was a “traveling revue” that landed Sutherland and Fonda on an FBI watchlist.
Donald Sutherland is survived by wife Francine Racette, sons Roeg, Rossif, Angus, and Kiefer, daughter Rachel, and four grandchildren.
