Jon Stewart called former President Donald Trump’s claim that he respects fellow former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama complete “bullshit” while arguing that Michelle Obama could have easily taken President Joe Biden’s spot at the top of the Democratic Party ticket.

Historian and author Jill Lepore argued on Stewart’s The Weekly Show that Michelle Obama — who spoke at the Democratic National Convention this week — is not getting enough credit for not running after Biden dropped his reelection campaign.

“It’s not Joe Biden who selflessly gave up the presidency, it’s Michelle Obama! Nobody’s pointed that out. She could have walked right into that nomination,” Lepore said.

“Wow. She could have. She still could!” Stewart agreed.

“Nobody gives her credit for that. The dignity talked about — she kept talking about the presidency having a certain amount of dignity to it, that’s her,” Lepore said.

Stewart argued that “conspiratorial” and “vile” attacks from her husband’s time in office is likely what keeps her from putting her family through it again. The “leader” behind many of those attacks, Stewart added, was Trump.

“You could tell though she was wounded by the treatment that the Obama family, not just the president, but the entire family, she was really wounded by the, if we’re being honest, disgusting treatment, which continues to this day, of the Obama family and just the vile politics, not policy, not anything other than vile, conspiratorial, personal, disturbing [attacks],” Stewart said.

He then dismissed Trump claiming this week he respects the Obamas.

“And then you have Trump yesterday, [saying], I’ve got a lot of respect for the Obamas. Bullshit!” Stewart said.

Trump told CNN ahead of the Obamas speaking at the DNC that Barack Obama is a “nice gentleman” and he respects him and his wife.

“I happen to like him. I respect him, and I respect his wife,” Trump said.

“Him saying it doesn’t make it true,” Stewart shot back. “He was the leader of an absolute torrent and river of slime, and I imagine for her, she thought, we’ve given our pound of flesh to this endeavor and I don’t want any part of that.”

Trump’s latest comments about the Obamas are unusually positive for him as Trump was one of the fiercest promoters of a birther conspiracy theory while Obama was in office, repeatedly claiming the then-president was not a citizen and had a fraudulent birth certificate.

Both of the Obamas tore into Trump while speaking in Chicago this week. Michelle Obama accused the former president of “failing forward” and benefitting from the “affirmative action of generation wealth.”
