Maggie Haberman Says Trump Is ‘Trying Very Hard to Bait’ Kamala Harris on Race and Gender, But She’s ‘Not Interested in Doing That’
CNN commentator and New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman said former President Donald Trump is desperately trying to goad Vice President Kamala Harris on race and gender.
The network had just aired an interview with Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz. At one point in the interview, CNN’s Dana Bash asked Harris about Trump’s attack on her last month.
“I didn’t know she was black until a number of years ago when she happened to turn Black,” Trump told a gathering of Black journalists. “And now she wants to be known as Black.”
“Same old, tired playbook,” the vice president responded. “Next question, please.”
“That’s it?” Bash asked.
“That’s it,” said Harris.
After the interview, Anderson Cooper asked Haberman for her reaction.
“Clearly, she was ready for that and… chose to just brush it aside, to not go down that rabbit hole,” he said.
Haberman replied:
Her campaign has made a very concerted effort to try not to get baited. And Trump has been trying very hard to bait her and to bait her supporters on issues related to race, on issues related to gender. And her campaign and the vice president are not interested in doing that. Now, I don’t know whether they will decide strategically to say more or engage more at some point. The debate might be a place where they do that. It might not be a place where they do that.
You know, her convention speech – and she had a very successful convention – her speech really didn’t get into the historic nature of her candidacy. Other people talked about that in their speeches. She did not. And you know, I think there’s a variety of reasons why, but that was a very intentional answer that I think you will hear a lot of.
