Democratic strategist James Carville was reminded by Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) that he complimented her in an unusual way, leading Carville to declare, “I love bitches and I love winning!”

Pelosi joined Carville and Al Hunt this week on the Politics War Room podcast for special coverage of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago. Pelosi teased that Carville had used a certain “term” while talking about her and she had heard former Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel (D) reference in 2006.

“Rahm quotes James about how much I wanted to win in 2006. Maybe he will use the term,” Pelosi said while sitting next to Carville.

It took to the final minutes of the podcast for Pelosi to actually share the story. The former House Speaker was recalling some Democrats expressing concern about their individual races while President Joe Biden was still running for reelection, revealing some were concerned about their chances if Biden fell behind by more than five points in the polls. Pelosi used the moment to recall another moment in which she had to use decisive leadership to keep Democrats on message.

“In ’06, Rahm said to me — there was a suggestion we do something, and some of our members objected to it because they thought it was uncomplimentary to the Congress, but I said, we’re going to do that, so when I said we’re going to do that,” Pelosi recalled as she pointed to Carville, crediting him with the next quote “Rahm said, ‘That B really wants to win.'”

Carville and Pelosi immediately laughed, with Carville saying he couldn’t think of a better compliment.

“I couldn’t think of a higher compliment! I really couldn’t. I love bitches and I love winning!” he said. “I got to tell you, I like them both.”
